CURTISS-WRIGHT AWARDED DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT BY NORTHROP GRUMMAN TO UPGRADE BATTLE-TESTED UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM

$4 Million Contract Secured To Design, Develop and Manufacture Sensor Management Unit Subsystems on the Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial System
ROSELAND, N.J., Jun 23, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Curtiss-Wright Corp. (NYSE: CW, CW.B) today announced that its VISTA Controls subsidiary, a cutting-edge manufacturer of mission critical systems for military and severe environment applications, was awarded a new contract by Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems, El Segundo, CA., to develop the Sensor Management Unit (SMU) for the Global Hawk unmanned aerial reconnaissance system.
Global Hawk, a high-altitude, long-endurance system, supplies military and joint battlefield commanders high-resolution, near real-time imagery of large geographical areas without placing human life in danger. It offers military decision-makers the most up-to-date information concerning enemy location, resources and battlefield conditions. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor to the U.S. Air Force for the Global Hawk program.
The $4 million contract covers design, development and manufacture of seven integrated SMU subsystems, with the engineering-manufacturing- development phase beginning immediately. The SMU sub-system interconnects the sensor suite to the satellite and ground communication systems as well as interfaces with the existing dual-redundant Integrated Mission Management Computer (IMMC). Created to take maximum advantage of VISTA Controls' existing capabilities in rugged open-architecture COTS electronics, the SMU will provide a seamless interface between sensor payloads and the rest of the aircraft systems. This facilitates the process of redefining and changing the SMU without impacting on other aircraft systems.
